OBISTAN

KINDER-PREPARATORY SCHOOL

Obistan Kinder-Preparatory was pioneered by the Kingston Open Bible Church under the pastoral leadership of the late Rev. Frank W. Summers, as an extension of its total ministry to the community.

Its logo is a map of Jamaica bordered by the inscription “spiritually alive, mentally alert and physically fit” and its motto is “Training Tomorrow leaders Today. Together they highlight the aim of the school to help its students realize academic excellence with a spiritual perspective.

The door of the school were formally opened on September 9, 1971, but due to inclement weather, only six students attended. Classes were postponed until the following day, and then twenty six students attended. By the end of the term thirty nine students were on roll.

As the school developed it became obvious that the facilities were in adequate. The decision was taken, therefore, to close the Preparatory department and this was done in July, 1978. The community, nonetheless, expressed the desire to have that department reopened. The church Board sought to acquire the adjoining lot, 1A Carawina Avenue, in 1980, and was successful after much difficulty. Ground-breaking for the complex which houses the school was held on Saturday, September 7, 1985 three days after the Preparatory department was re-opened on a gradual basis, starting with Prep-1 and adding one Prep Class each year.

September 12, 1988, and Hurricane Gilbert made his memorable visit to Jamaica. Like others, Obistan will long remember that time as the school was left roofless. As not much damage was done to the incomplete building, it became home for the school on September 21.
